Recent years have seen the nearby areas of Napli, Honokowai and Kahana undergo transformation and growth both in the residential and visitor sector. During the 19th century Lahaina became the global center of the whaling industry. As many as 400 ships moored off Lahaina Town. King Kamehameha III preferred Lahaina to the bustle of Honolulu and built his royal grounds, Moku'ula, near the town center. Today, Moku'ula is located across from 505 Front Street.
There are several world-class golf courses within the Ka'anapali and Kapalua and the prestigious Mercedes championship is held here each year. Honolua Bay located past Kapalua Resort is known for it's idyllic snorkeling during the summer months and large surf in the winter time. New settlements of homes have surfaced South of Lahaina in the Olowalu and Launiupoko communities.
Launiupoko Beach Park is a popular retreat as a "beach day" for both residents and visitors. With it's large monkey pod trees providing ample shade, picnic benches and public facililties, the shoreline supplies plenty of summer surf and hours of entertainment for the whole family.
