Here the trade winds blow steadily 85% of the year from the north-northeast direction. In the early 1900?s, Pa?ia Town was a thriving farm community driven by the production of sugar cane. Immigrant labors of various ethnic backgrounds lived in separate camps surrounding the town and sugar mill. When machinery integrated into sugar production, tractors and automobiles replaced the horse and mule as the mode of transportation. The plantation workers were relocated to the alluvial sand dunes of Kahului, and approximately three quarters of the original village and homes were plowed under to provide room for more sugar cane fields.

During the 1960's and 1970's, Paia Town had declined economically and became a trifle rest stop on the road to Hana. Paia and the surrounding communities realized a rebirth during the mid-1980's, when Maui's North Shore attracted windsurfing enthusiasts from around the world. Most of the original buildings in Paia have retained their original facade but the businesses that thrive here and its vitality have dramatically changed.

The nearby beachfront community known as Spreckelsville is home of the Maui Country Club established in 1925. Here Maui residents enjoy tennis, golf, dining and social gatherings. Today, Paia, Spreckelsville and Kuau are a mecca for ocean enthusiasts. The community's authenticity, diversity and ocean activities draw in both residents and visitors from all over the world.
