The town of Paia is very small and quaint with wonderful old buildings, reminiscent of the time when it was the County seat. It is surrounded by the neighborhood communities of Spreckelsville and Ku'au. Residents comprise a mixture of, young and old, from kama'aina, old and young hippies, new age spiritualists and ocean enthusiast. Paia is known as the windsurfing capital of the world. One of the best and most challenging windsurfing spots in the world is Ho'okipa Beach, a short drive from the town center.
There is a small post office here, a Bank of Hawai'i branch and just past the main part of town, a civic center and a community center. Worshippers have their choice of several congregations, ranging from Catholic to Buddhist.
The town's buildings contain mostly small boutique clothing shops, art galleries, a handful of terrific restaurants and of course, several surf shops. Mana Foods (organic food store) is an icon and a major gathering place for many of the locals and visitors to Maui.
On the Kahului side of Paia is Baldwin Beach, a beautiful north shore beach, and the Maui Country Club with its 9 hole golf course, pool, tennis facilities and restaurant. The town is almost completely surrounded by sugar cane fields and just up the hill on the road to Makawao is the old sugar mill. Because of its position as the gateway to Ho'okipa Beach, the road to Hana, and Upcountry, Paia seems always humming with activity and host to a diverse group of residents and visitors. A portion of Haiku is located along the windward, or North Shore of Maui. Many Haiku residents consider the upper or mauka (towards the mountain) portion near Makawao Town a part of Upcountry Maui. Regardless, Haiku's windward location provides ample trade wind weather keeping the area moderately cool and green from tropical showers practically year round. Considered of the largest areas of Maui, Haiku has a dry side with approximately 40 to 60 inches of annual rainfall and a wet side with rainfall 60 to 90 inches annually. Many homes for sale in Haiku utilize nature or rainwater catchment for their source of domestic water.
