Entering the Wailea Resort, one immediately notices a change in their surroundings from the rest of South Maui. Wailea was conceived as a planned unit development (PUD) in the late 1970’s by one of Hawaii’s largest land owners, Alexander & Baldwin. The land previously used for cattle ranching was dry and covered with Kiawe trees and cactus. The difference between what exists today from years ago is night and day; from brown to green.

The 1,800-acre master-planned resort at Makena, includes the 310-room beachfront Maui Beach & Golf Resort with two 18-hole golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., surrounded by approximately 1,300 acres of undeveloped land. Maluaka Beach surrounds the Makena Resort. The historic Keawalae Congregational Church and popular Makena small craft/boat landing are nearby.
