Pa‘ia, Spreckelsville and Ku‘au are located along Maui’s vibrant North Shore. Here the trade winds blow steadily at a NNE direction most of the year. In the early 1900’s, Pa‘ia Town was a thriving farm community driven by the production of sugar cane. Immigrant labors of various ethnicities lived in separate camps surrounding the town and mill. When machinery was integrated into the production of sugar and automobiles became the mode of transportation, the plantation camps were relocated to the alluvial sand dunes of Kahului making room for more sugar cane fields. By the 1970’s, Pa‘ia Town had declined and became a rest stop on the road to Hana. Pa‘ia realized a rebirth and an economic revival, when the North Shore attracted a new sport enthusiast, the windsurfer. Though most of the buildings in Pa‘ia remain the original structures, its businesses and atmosphere have dramatically changed. The nearby beachfront community known as Spreckelsville is home of Maui Country Club established in 1925. Here Maui residents enjoy tennis, golf, dining and social gatherings. Today, Pa‘ia, Spreckelsville and Ku‘au are a mecca for ocean enthusiasts. The areas vitality, diversity and ocean activities draw residents and visitors from all over the world.
