MAKAWAO REAL ESTATE

Makawao Real Estate

The name Makawao means “the beginning of the forest”.  The early foreign settlers were Portuguese immigrants involved in cattle ranching.  As a result, today it is known as a “Paniolo” (cowboy) town.  Charming, authentic and full of characters, many Maui residents find Makawao and nearby Olinda and Haliimaile an ideal place to call home.   The town consists of boutiques, restaurants and art galleries. Historic Komoda’s Bakery known for its delicious cream puffs and stick donuts remain in demand.

The residents of this district adhere to a strong ideal of the independent spirit.  Located at an elevation ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 feet above sea level, Makawao sits on the cusp of the northeastern slopes of Haleakala.  The temperature is cool year round with consistent trade winds and rainfall.  Average annual rainfall is approximately 70 inches.  Two of Maui’s finest private schools, Montessori and Seabury Hall are located within five minutes of Makawao Town. A drive to the Kahului Airport will take approximately 30 minutes. Homes in Upcountry Makawao will vary from older modest plantation style homes to opulent estates on large acreage.
