“Upcountry” Maui is bordered to the east by the historic and charming “Paniolo” (Hawaiian cowboy) town of Makawao with its retail shops, restaurants, and art galleries; to the southwest by an area known as Ulupalakua, once the center of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s sandalwood trade, with its vineyards, working cattle ranch and great expanse of open space; to the southeast the top of 10,023 foot Mt. Haleakala (“House of the Sun”) and its famous crater, the crown jewel of the Haleakala National Park.

The area known as Kula is situated at an elevation of between 1,500 and the 4,000 feet above sea level in the middle of “Upcountry” Maui. Buffered from the prevailing trade winds, with its rolling pastures, rural serenity, agricultural bounty, and exotic flora, the Kula area is conveniently located to area services and schools, yet is only 20 minutes from the golden sand beaches of Maui’s North Shore and the best windsurfing and kite boarding in the entire world.
